Full moon day during Ashadha month is known as Guru Purnima day. Traditionally this day is reserved for Guru Puja or Guru Worship. On this day disciples offer Puja or pay respect to their Gurus. Guru refers to guide who enlighten disciples by his knowledge and teachings.


Guru Purnima is also known as Vyasa Purnima and this day is commemorated as birth anniversary of Veda Vyasa. Veda Vyasa was the author in the Hindu epic Mahabharata.

 गुरुर्ब्रह्मा ग्रुरुर्विष्णुः गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः।

गुरुः साक्षात् परं ब्रह्म तस्मै श्री गुरवे नमः।।


भावार्थ:

गुरु ब्रह्मा है, गुरु विष्णु है, गुरु हि शंकर है। 

गुरु हि साक्षात् परब्रह्म है, उन सद्गुरु को प्रणाम।

अज्ञान तिमिरान्धस्य ज्ञानाञ्जन शलाकया।

चक्षुरुन्मीलितं येन तस्मै श्री गुरवे नमः।।


भावार्थ :

जिसने ज्ञानांजनरुप शलाका से, 

अज्ञानरुप अंधकार से अंध हुए लोगों की आँखें खोली,

 उन गुरु को नमस्कार।

विनयफलं शुश्रूषा गुरुशुश्रूषाफलं श्रुतं ज्ञानम्।

ज्ञानस्य फलं विरतिः विरतिफलं चाश्रवनिरोधः।।


भावार्थ:

विनय का फल सेवा है, गुरुसेवा का फल ज्ञान है, 

ज्ञान का फल विरक्ति (स्थायित्व) है,

और विरक्ति का फल आश्रवनिरोध (बंधनमुक्ति तथा मोक्ष) है।

 प्रेरकः सूचकश्वैव वाचको दर्शकस्तथा । 

शिक्षको बोधकश्चैव षडेते गुरवः स्मृताः ॥


भावार्थ :

प्रेरणा देनेवाले, सूचन देनेवाले, (सच) बतानेवाले, 

(रास्ता) दिखानेवाले, शिक्षा देनेवाले, और बोध करानेवाले 

– ये सब गुरु समान है ।

 गुकारस्त्वन्धकारस्तु रुकार स्तेज उच्यते।

अन्धकार निरोधत्वात् गुरुरित्यभिधीयते।।


भावार्थ:

‘गु’कार याने अंधकार, और ‘रु’कार याने तेज;

 जो अंधकार का निरोध (ज्ञान का प्रकाश देकर अंधकार को रोकना) करता है, 

वही वास्तव में गुरू कहलाता है।

गुरौ न प्राप्यते यत्तन्नान्यत्रापि हि लभ्यते।

गुरुप्रसादात सर्वं तु प्राप्नोत्येव न संशयः।।


भावार्थ:

गुरु के द्वारा जो प्राप्त नहीं होता, वह अन्यत्र भी नहीं मिलता।

 गुरु कृपा से निस्संदेह (मनुष्य​) सब कुछ प्राप्त कर ही लेता है।

निवर्तयत्यन्यजनं प्रमादतः स्वयं च निष्पापपथे प्रवर्तते।

गुणाति तत्त्वं हितमिच्छुरंगिनाम् शिवार्थिनां यः स गुरु र्निगद्यते।।


भावार्थ:

जो दूसरों को प्रमाद करने से रोकते हैं, 

स्वयं निष्पाप रास्ते से चलते हैं, 

हित और कल्याण की कामना रखनेवाले को तत्त्वबोध करते हैं, 

उन्हें गुरु कहते हैं।

शरीरं चैव वाचं च बुद्धिन्द्रिय मनांसि च।

नियम्य प्राञ्जलिः तिष्ठेत् वीक्षमाणो गुरोर्मुखम्।।


भावार्थ:

शरीर, वाणी, बुद्धि, इंद्रिय और मन को संयम (काबू) में रखकर, 

हाथ जोडकर गुरु के सन्मुख (सामने) देखना चाहिए।
